INSTRUCTIONS for Taking and Scoring the ECG Practice and REAL Exams

Each of the Practice Exams has been especially designed with dual purpose: (i) To provide you an opportunity to assess your ECG interpretation skills with a Practice Exam identical in format to the REAL ECG Competency Assessment Exams; and (ii) To provide a challenging and interesting educational format for enhancing your clinical ECG interpretation ability by means of detailed explained answers with links from each question to a brief PDF didactic on each topic covered. We suggest you start with Practice Exam-1 and go through the questions in sequence - BUT - at any time you may skip around as desired between any of the Practice Exams offered.

GRADE Button

Feel free to click the GRADE BUTTON at any time to see the detailed explained answers. Depending on whether you are using the Practice Exams to assess if you are ready to take the Real Exam - OR - just reviewing Practice questions as an educational experience - You may decide to GRADE after one or a series of questions (to see the explained answers immediately) - OR - only after completing an entire Practice Exam (to see your total score).

NOTE: Each Practice and each REAL Exam consists of 35 Questions. A score of 80% (= 28/35 correct answers) has been deemed a PASSING Grade for family medicine residents by the developer of ECG Competency.

DISCLAIMER: Designation of a "passing" or "not passing" score on these exams is based on the opinion of the developer as to what should constitute a minimal level of competency in ECG interpretation in the area of primary care. This is NOT an official designation.

UNGRADE Button

You may click the UNGRADE BUTTON at any time while taking the Practice Exams. Doing so clears your grade and allows you to finish taking the exam without seeing the detailed explained answers. You can "grade" and "ungrade" any given Practice Exam as often as you like. NOTE: Use of the toggle (in the upper lefthand menu bar of your browser window) allows you to move back 1 page or forward 1 page - and serves as a method to speed up the "grade/ungrade" process.

RETAKING a Practice Exam

To clear the answers from any of the Practice Exams so you can start over and retake the exam - On the page that lists your exams, click the link that says CLEAR ANSWERS under the column heading START OVER.

INSTRUCTIONS for Taking the REAL ECG Exams

Each of the REAL ECG Exams can only be taken once. These exams are to be used for obtaining a score of your competency in ECG interpretation. Because these exams will be used by numerous other providers - there are NO explained answers. You are on your HONOR not to tell others these questions. Otherwise - the content and format of the 35 questions in each of the REAL Exams is identical to that in each of the Practice Exams.

FINAL NOTE by KEN GRAUER, MD: Our reason for developing multiple different Real Exams is to provide an opportunity for remediation and retaking another REAL Exam in the event that you obtained a suboptimal score in your first attempt. Our principal objective is that you optimize your skills in ECG interpretation. There is NO time limit for doing so. Even after obtaining a "passing score" - ongoing practice and application are required to maintain ECG competency. Our Goal is simply to facilitate the process by making the art of ECG interpretation interesting as well as clinically relevant and helpful to you in your practice situation.
